The Designers Who Inspire Us

Our chairs are tributes to the great minds of mid-century and modernist design. These men and women created pieces that still feel fresh today, and we are proud to bring their ideas into more European homes.

Great design never goes out of style. The pieces you see in our collection were first imagined decades ago, yet they still look right at home in a modern flat. Here are the designers whose work we honour, and the stories behind their most famous creations.

Charles and Ray Eames portrait
1907 — 1978 & 1912 — 1988

Charles and Ray Eames

Charles and Ray Eames were an American husband and wife team. They met at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and went on to become one of the most important design couples of the last century.

During the Second World War, they learned how to bend and shape plywood while making leg splints for wounded soldiers. After the war, they used this same skill to make furniture. In 1956, they created their famous lounge chair and ottoman. Charles said he wanted it to have the "warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman's mitt." It became one of the most loved chair designs ever made.

Ludwig Mies
van der Rohe portrait
1886 — 1969

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Mies van der Rohe was a German-American architect known for his clean, simple style. He is famous for the phrase "less is more." He believed that beauty comes from careful proportions, not from extra decoration.

In 1929, he designed a chair for the German Pavilion at the Barcelona International Exhibition, working alongside designer Lilly Reich. The chair was made to seat the King and Queen of Spain, so it had to be elegant and grand. With its crossed steel frame and buttoned leather cushions, the Barcelona chair has become one of the most recognised seats of the 20th century.

Le Corbusier portrait
1887 — 1965

Le Corbusier

Le Corbusier was a Swiss-French architect and designer. He saw the home as "a machine for living in," and he wanted furniture that was both useful and beautiful.

In the late 1920s, together with Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, he created the LC4 chaise longue. Its gentle curve follows the natural shape of a resting body, and you can tilt it to find the perfect position to relax. It is often called the "relaxing machine," and it remains a symbol of comfort and clean modern design.

Eero Saarinen portrait
1910 — 1961

Eero Saarinen

Eero Saarinen was a Finnish-American architect and designer. He grew up surrounded by design, since his father was an architect and his mother was a textile artist.

Saarinen disliked the messy look of too many table and chair legs in a room. He called it the "slum of legs." To fix this, he designed the Tulip chair in the mid-1950s, giving it a single smooth pedestal base instead of four legs. The result is a clean, open look that makes any dining room feel calmer and more spacious.

Eileen Gray portrait
1878 — 1976

Eileen Gray

Eileen Gray was an Irish architect and designer who spent most of her working life in Paris. For many years her work was overlooked, but today she is celebrated as one of the most important designers of the modern movement.

In the late 1920s, she designed an adjustable side table, often called the E-1027 table after the house she built. Its clever height can be raised or lowered, so it works beside a sofa or even over a bed. It is simple, useful, and quietly beautiful, just like all of her best work.

Design That Lasts

These designers changed the way we think about furniture. Their work is decades old, yet it still feels fresh and exciting. At Sederica, we carefully recreate the look and feel of these classics using quality materials, so more people can enjoy iconic design at a fair price. We are not the original makers, and we have no link to them or their licensed brands. We simply admire their work, and we hope you do too.
